BJJ is a grappling style that grew out of judo. It emphasises fighting on the ground, reaching control, then finishing with a choke or joint lock. There are no strikes. Sparring is a major part of training, and rank is based on performance, time and effort.
You don’t need to be in shape to start—use BJJ to get fit. Saying you must be fit before starting BJJ is like saying you must be fit before going to the gym.
Shorts and a t‑shirt or a rash guard are fine initially. If you continue, you’ll need a Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu Gi. Avoid clothes with pockets, belt loops or baggy fabrics.
Light warm‑up and solo drills (rolls, breakfalls, shrimping), partner techniques, then live sparring (rolling). Tap when needed and restart in neutral.
Qualified black belt instructor with good lineage; diverse students; clean, organised facilities (clean mats, changing rooms, showers, cleaning schedule).
