Starting a martial art is the hardest part. Walking through the door for the first time takes more courage than anything you will do once you are on the mats. That is exactly what this course is built for.

From Monday 7 September we are running a six week beginners course covering two martial arts at once: kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Everyone starts together, everyone starts from scratch, and nobody is expected to know anything on day one.

What you will learn

Kickboxing runs on Mondays, 7:15pm to 8:30pm. You will learn your stance and how to move, the basic punches and kicks, and how to put them together on the pads without gassing out in the first round.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu runs on Tuesdays, 6:00pm to 7:00pm. You will learn how to control someone on the ground, how to get out from underneath, and the first few submissions every beginner should have.

The two complement each other. Kickboxing teaches you distance and timing on your feet. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you what to do if the fight ends up on the floor, which in the real world it usually does.

Who it is for

Complete beginners. That is the whole point of running it as a course rather than dropping you into a regular class. Everyone in the room is at the same stage, so there is nobody to keep up with.

  • No previous martial arts experience needed. Every session starts from the basics.
  • No fitness requirement. You will get fitter by doing it, not before it.
  • Wear shorts and a t-shirt or a rash guard. You do not need a Gi to start.
  • Bring water, and turn up a few minutes early for your first session.

Dates and price

The course runs for six weeks, starting Monday 7 September and finishing on Tuesday 13 October. That is twelve sessions across the two martial arts.

£49 for the full six week course. Places are limited, because we keep beginner groups small enough to actually coach everyone in the room.

You can find the full details, including the session by session schedule, on the beginners course page. If you already know you want to carry on afterwards, have a look at our beginners BJJ class.
